NEWSLETTER - WINTER 2007

Just Back from Costa Rica … more

Hi,

Welcome to the very first issue of the glutenfree traveller.

glutenfree travel has been a lot of time, passion and research in its creation, so we’d like to thank you for such an enthusiastic response to the concept.

For Karsten and I, glutenfree travel is more than just our business; it's an important part of life. In April 2006, I discovered what life is like as a coeliac - bloating,  cramps, going through the diagnosis and adjustments you and your family have to make, before finally accepting it, and realising you can still live a full life.

So, armed with our passion for travel, and years of industry experience, we decided that we wanted to help make holidays and business trips, wonderful, worry-free experiences for all glutenfree travellers.

We’ve spent months meeting with and educating airlines, hotels, resorts, tour companies and others about coeliac traveller needs. We've been delighted with their responses and real desire to get involved and do more.

On behalf of our specialist team at glutenfree travel, we look forward to helping you with all your travel needs and welcome your ideas, experiences and suggestions to help us build an even better glutenfree travel service, because we're all on the same journey.

Happy reading,

Michelle Horne

Royal Auto drives the gluten free message

An article in the April edition of RACV Royal Auto created an unprecedented response. Many of you contacted our office during April.  We had lots of calls from gluten free food manufacturers, were bombarded with interest from hotels and restaurants, and hits on the website skyrocketed. We even had  some interest for the camel!

At the time I was sitting on a beach in Costa Rica, so thanks to Jo for handling all the enquiries!   Just in case you missed it, here is the RACV article

Exclusive glutenfree travel Gourmet Walking Tours

Walkabout Gourmet Adventures are a fantastic business that started with walks in Victoria over 20 years ago and has now grown into a company that runs dozens of tours throughout Europe and Australia.

Run by Graeme and Gabriella Clark – who is a gourmet chef, we have been friends of the Clarke family since the beginning and are proud to announce a partnership that will progressively see glutenfree options appearing on the majority of their tours.

The first two glutenfree departures are:
Explore Wilsons Promontory - 7th December 2007
Paradores & The Road From Santiago - 5th September 2008

We need your help on this exciting journey! We’re working hard to build our database of gluten friendly airlines, hotels, cruise lines, and tours – but nothing is more powerful than a first-hand recommendation!

Nobody knows where to find great gluten free food better than a coeliac. So we need to hear about your travel experiences – good, bad or indifferent.  Tell us about people who couldn’t do enough for you or who made things oh so easy, and we’ll rave about them on the website!  Let us know about the resorts who didn’t understand what you needed or what gluten free really means – we’ll get in touch with them and see if we can educate them in changing their practices. And if not, rate them accordingly.

Something spring to mind? Then join the journey and send us an email at info@glutenfreetravel.com.au

Just back from...Costa Rica

"By the time we reached our lodge the waterways were only a few metres wide and you could reach out and touch Caymans (small crocodiles) that were sunning themselves on the banks, howler monkeys echoed in the trees and cormorants perched on the protruding branches of fallen trees...Michelle was ready to start on her stash of gluten free products that took up half the suitcase but we were pleasantly surprised." Qantas gets it right most of the time
Ok, so it’s fashionable to bag Qantas, but let’s be fair, they are amongst the best airlines in the world and provide a pretty good (if rather bland) gluten free meal.

Do American Airlines offer gluten free meals?
Ask any travel agent and they will say yes, but closer investigation reveals that the only special meal served on all AA flights is kosher. You need to be on a very long flight to even get a meal in economy class. So be prepared before you get to the airport, as most American airports have virtually no gluten free food available. I went very hungry for 8 hours flying from Panama City via Miami to Los Angeles after being assured by AA that my special meal would be available!

Destination of the Month - Italy

Introduction
When thinking Italy you're thinking pizza pasta pizza pasta- surely this cant be Coeliac friendly can it? Well Mamma Mia you are in for a great surprise!  In fact- Italy could be the top destination this summer in Europe for coeliacs

With a 1 in 2000 diagnosis rate, Italians are certainly very aware of gluten intolerance. Almost every restaurant can offer Gluten Free alternatives for the fantastic seafood, meats, and salads that Italy is so famous for. Many restaurants serve gluten free pasta options, but failing that, they will often encourage you to bring your own pasta in, which they will happily cook for you.

Even better news, one of our clients reports having enjoyed the most delicious gluten free pizza in Rome.

With supermarket chains such as PAMS stocking a fantastic range of gluten free products you certainly won't go hungry!

In fact, you don’t even have to miss out on a 'especial Italiano gelato' as many of the little ice cream shops have gluten free cones these days!

Your best source of information is the brilliant AIC (Associazione Italiana Celiachia - Italian Coeliac Society). They have a new telephone service - in English - where you can receive swift, precise, up-to-date and reliable answers to queries about venues and restaurants throughout Italy.

At present there are over 1,000 venues – farmhouses, hotels, bars serving hot meals, bed and breakfasts, wineries, ice-cream parlours, inns, sandwich bars, pizza restaurants, pubs, restaurants, catering companies, trattorias and tourist villages – which have been selected by the AIC, so you will be able to enjoy all the wonders of Italy without a worry!
